Genetic Variation and Hybridization in Evolutionary Radiations of Cichlid Fishes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Evolutionary radiations are responsible for much of the variation in biodiversity across taxa. Cichlid fishes well known spectacular evolutionary radiations, as they have repeatedly evolved into large and phenotypically diverse arrays species. genomes carry signatures past events and, at same time, substrate ongoing evolution. We survey genome-wide data available literature covering 438 cichlid populations (412 species) multiple to synthesize information about patterns sharing genetic variation. Nucleotide diversity within species is low cichlids, with 92% surveyed having less than median value found other vertebrates. Divergence also low, a proportion shared among due incomplete lineage sorting widespread hybridization. Population genetics therefore provides suitable conceptual framework genomic studies radiations. focus detail on roles hybridization shaping promoting diversification.

Evolution of genomic structural variation and genomic architecture in the adaptive radiations of African cichlid fishes
African cichlid fishes are an ideal system for studying explosive rates of speciation and the origin of diversity in adaptive radiation. Within the last few million years, more than 2000 species have evolved in the Great Lakes of East Africa, the largest adaptive radiation in vertebrates. These young species show spectacular diversity in their coloration, morphology and behavior. However, littl...
متن کاملMolecular investigation of genetic assimilation during the rapid adaptive radiations of East African cichlid fishes.
Adaptive radiations are characterized by adaptive diversification intertwined with rapid speciation within a lineage resulting in many ecologically specialized, phenotypically diverse species. It has been proposed that adaptive radiations can originate from ancestral lineages with pronounced phenotypic plasticity in adaptive traits, facilitating ecologically driven phenotypic diversification th...
متن کاملAncient hybridization fuels rapid cichlid fish adaptive radiations
Understanding why some evolutionary lineages generate exceptionally high species diversity is an important goal in evolutionary biology. Haplochromine cichlid fishes of Africa's Lake Victoria region encompass >700 diverse species that all evolved in the last 150,000 years. How this 'Lake Victoria Region Superflock' could evolve on such rapid timescales is an enduring question. Here, we demonstr...

متن کاملThe interaction of sexually and naturally selected traits in the adaptive radiations of cichlid fishes.
The question of how genetic variation translates into organismal diversity has puzzled biologists for decades. Despite recent advances in evolutionary and developmental genetics, the mechanisms that underlie adaptation, diversification and evolutionary innovation remain largely unknown. The exceptionally diverse species flocks of cichlid fishes are textbook examples of adaptive radiation and ex...
